Papua New Guinea: Five-Year Project for Climate Adaptation in Small-Scale Agriculture
This project, titled "Adaptation of Small-Scale Agriculture for improved food security of resilient communities in Papua New Guinea (ASSA)", aims to enhance the sustainability of main agricultural value chains in Papua New Guinea, specifically targeting Enga, Milne Bay, and New Ireland provinces. The core purpose is to improve the quality of agricultural produce, increase access to markets, and create green jobs, particularly for women and youth in vulnerable communities, through the adoption of climate-smart and climate-resilient practices. Key objectives include integrating climate-resilient agriculture into standard farming techniques to boost productivity, resilience, and food security for vulnerable smallholder farmers (especially women and youth); enhancing the ability of vulnerable smallholder farming communities (particularly women) to access postharvest processing, storage technologies, and profitable markets; and fostering the development of climate-resilient practices through capacity building and knowledge management. The project is implemented by The Pacific Community (SPC) as the Regional Implementing Entity, with the Government of Papua New Guinea as the Executing Entity. It is requesting USD 10,000,000 in financing and has a Letter of Endorsement signed by the Designated Authority. The project is planned for implementation over a five-year period. This duration is considered necessary to implement structural changes in food crop systems, account for different crop cycles, build institutional capacity in the sector, and significantly improve women's participation and leadership in agriculture. The project addresses climate change impacts on key food crops like sweet potato and swamp taro, considering climate drivers such as increasing temperature and changes in rainfall.
