Ghana Shea Landscape Restoration and REDD+ Project Proposed October 6, 2020

This project, proposed on 06 October 2020 (FP137: B.26/02) to the Green Climate Fund by UNDP for Ghana, aims to restore degraded savanna forests and strengthen livelihoods in Ghana's northern savanna zone. The area is characterized by traditional farming integrated with nearly 400 million shea and other trees, but faces severe strain from climate change, agricultural modernization, and heavy reliance on wood for charcoal. The project's purpose is to enhance ecosystem services, improve adaptive capacities by making ecosystems more resilient, and strengthen REDD+ systems. Key measures include supporting self-financing community management for savanna forest restoration and utilizing public-private partnerships to restore degraded shea parklands. Shea landscapes are highlighted as important sources of carbon storage and crucial for local livelihoods, particularly for women who rely on harvesting shea nuts for the cosmetics industry. While specific deadlines and compliance dates for project implementation are not detailed, the project operates within the framework of REDD+ and seeks funding from the Green Climate Fund. Affected sectors include forestry, agriculture, energy (charcoal), and local economies dependent on forest products. The project's gender assessment notes Ghana's existing legal and administrative frameworks supporting gender equality, including ratified international protocols (CEDAW, Beijing Platform for Action, SDGs) and national policies (National Gender Policy, National Gender Machinery, national development frameworks), which provide context for integrating gender considerations into project activities, particularly given the significant role of women in the shea value chain.

GSLREP GREEN CLIMATE FUND FUNDING PROPOSAL
1. Introduction
This gender assessment aims to provide an overview of the situation in Ghana, with a specific focus
on the GSLRP proposal. It therefore identifies gender issues that are relevant to the proposal, and
examines potential gender mainstreaming opportunities. The assessment was based upon available
data from studies conducted by the Government of Ghana, including the Forestry Commission, donor
agencies, and multilateral development banks. Specifically, this assessment involved:
a. Undertaking a desktop review of existing gender analyses and gender and natural resource
management sector resources within Ghana;
b. Aligning approaches in this proposal with the national priorities of Ghana as provided in the
roadmap developed by the Forestry Commission to guide the design and implementation of a
gender-sensitive REDD+ strategy;
