India's National Rail Plan 2030 Aims to Create Future-Ready Rail System and Increase Freight Modal Share

The National Rail Plan (NRP) for India – 2030, prepared by Indian Railways, aims to create a 'future ready' railway system by 2030. The core purpose is to formulate strategies based on operational capacities and commercial policy initiatives to significantly increase the modal share of Railways in freight traffic to 45% and sustain it. A key objective is to build capacity ahead of demand to cater to future growth up to 2050. The plan identifies specific projects for completion by 2024, including 58 Super critical Projects (3750 kms, costing ₹39,663 Crore) and 68 Critical Projects (6913 kms, costing ₹75,736 Crore). The plan affects the railway and freight transport sectors across India. The information was provided by the Minister of Railways, Communications and Electronic & Information Technology in a written reply.
