Sustainable Land & Water Resources Management Project in Mozambique (AfDB, approved 2012)

The Sustainable Land & Water Resources Management Project (SLWRMP) in Mozambique, implemented by the African Development Bank (AfDB) under the Pilot Program for Climate Resilience (PPCR), aims to strengthen the capacity of communities to address the inter-linked challenges of adverse impacts of climate change, rural poverty, food insecurity, and landscape degradation. The project's scope includes three main components: i) Agriculture Water Infrastructure Development, ii) Restoration of Natural Habitats & Landscapes (covering Landscape Management and Livelihood Diversification), and iii) Project Management. Key expected outcomes include enhanced water storage, increased food production in drought-prone communities, improved climate change resilience through livelihood diversification, restoration of natural habitats and landscapes, and integrated land planning and management. Success indicators include increased yield of major staple crops, restoration of 1500ha of forest areas, a 75% decrease in forest fire occurrences, and an increase in climate-smart infrastructure supporting livelihood diversification. The project affects sectors such as agriculture, water management, land use, forestry, rural development, and food security. The total estimated cost is USD 21.52 million, with a funding request under the PPCR of USD 15.75 million (Grant). Co-financing includes USD 2.51 million from the Government of Mozambique (counterpart funds) and USD 3.26 million from an AfDB ADF loan. The project was expected to be approved by the AfDB Board/Management in October 2012, with a mid-term review in 2015 and expected closure in 2018. The Global Mechanism of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is a partner, assisting in developing a Sustainable Land Management Investment Framework for the Gaza province.
